CLARIFICATION OF POLICY ON EXPRESSIVE ACTIVITIES

Facilities and Grounds Use policy: The policy was revised to clarify that ISU encourages public discourse. Any member of the university community or the public may use most outdoor areas for non-commercial expressive activities on a first come, first served basis without giving prior notice. The policy also addresses uses of indoor areas.

Agora: This term from ancient Greek society means “public gathering place.” In the spirit of encouraging public discourse, the term will be introduced with signage in two high-traffic locations on central campus that are particularly conducive to expressive activities. Note that expressive activities are NOT limited to these two areas.

Notice or Approval: Certain large events require prior notice and/or approval. Guidelines have been developed to simplify the process of obtaining authorization for indoor or outdoor activities meeting the policy’s definition of “public events.“
