Introduction
Locking out machinery and equipment prior to servicing or maintenance is an essential element of protecting employees from the unexpected start up or release of stored energy. To address this issue, and to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Standard, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) has developed the ISU Lockout/Tagout Manual. EH&S offers online LOTO training for employees who perform service and maintenance duties.
Policy Statement
Each department is responsible for evaluating areas under its administrative control to determine whether there are processes or equipment where the LOTO program would apply. Departments that find LOTO requirements applicable are responsible for the adoption and implementation of the provisions of the Iowa State University LOTO program. Departments are also responsible for providing employees with the proper equipment and training to implement the LOTO programs that are necessary to control hazardous energies.
Employees are responsible for observing all practices and procedures contained in the Iowa State University Lockout/Tagout program and other general safety practices, attending designated training sessions, and reporting hazardous or unsafe conditions to their supervisors or EH&S.
