Introduction

Federal law requires that hazardous materials be transported according to the requirements outlined in the Department of Transportation's Title 49 regulations.

Policy Statement

Shipping hazardous materials from the Iowa State University campus comes under the strict regulations of the Department of Transportation. Hazardous materials include laboratory chemicals, radioactive materials, compressed gases, biological agents, lithium batteries, and equipment or instruments that contain hazardous materials. Hazardous materials must be correctly classified, packaged, labeled, marked, and accompanied by appropriate paperwork. Environmental Health and Safety coordinates hazardous materials shipments for Iowa State University and must be contacted a minimum of three days prior to shipment.
